Mendoza, Argentina – The Dominican Republic suffered their second defeat of the 2023 FIFA Under-20 Men’s World Cup with a 6-0 loss to Brazil in Group D on Wednesday at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza, Argentina.
The Dominican Republic went toe-to-toe with the five-time champions in the first half hour, but a two-goal spurt in two minutes from Brazil’s Savio and Marcos Leonardo at the end of the half left the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship runners-up staring at a 2-0 halftime deficit.
The Dominican Republic looked to respond at the start of the second stanza, but Jean Pedroso’s header in the 57’ and Giovani’s left-footed strike in the 82’ extended the Brazil led to 4-0.
Dominican Republic MF Edison Azcona received a second yellow card and sending off in the 85’, allowing Brazil to tack on two late goals through Marlon Gomes and Matheus Martins for the 6-0 final.
Honduras will take to the field for a second time in the tournament as they square off with South Korea in Group F action on Thursday at the Estadio Malvinas Argentina in Mendoza.
Honduras suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in their opener against Gambia but can turn things around with victory against the AFC side, who were 2-1 winners versus France in their opening match.
