Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma is calculated to be the best goalkeeper in the world right now by the CIES, with Inter’s Yann Sommer in second place.

While Donnarumma has received a great deal of criticism for some of his performances in both the Azzurri jersey and especially for Paris Saint-Germain, the statistical analysis tells a different story.

According to the methodology used by the CIES Football Observatory Index, the Italian is the best goalkeeper in the world at this moment.

The index covers the top 100 goalkeepers who played at least 20 league matches over the last 365 days.

Donnarumma came out on top with a score of 95.5, followed by Inter and Switzerland shot-stopper Sommer on 91.7.

Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid and Belgium was third on 88.0.

The calculations were based on the percentage of saves at domestic league level compared to the expected value of the goals.

Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar was the next highest ranked in Serie A, in 24th place with a score of 78.8.
