A draw on the night wasn’t enough for Flamengo with Gabi Barbosa’s goal was cancelled out by Germán Cano as Fluminense lifted the 2022 Campeonato Carioca title, winning 3-1 on aggregate.
Scorers: Cano 44′; Gabi 39′
Desperate to get off a strong start Flamengo pushed Fluminense from the first minute, proving threatening both in possession and in transition.
However, the Rubo-Negro struggled to create any clear cut chances before talismanic striker Gabi Barbosa put them ahead in the 39th minute. A simple long ball was flicked on to Giorgian de Arrascaeta who skirted to the byline before putting the ball on a platter for the Brazilian forward.
Their joy was short-lived though as, against the run of play, Fluminense equalised on the stroke of half-time. Some sharp interplay down the left wing culminated with Germán Cano whose scuffed effort trickled past the helpless Hugo Souza, restoring a two-goal lead on aggregate.
The Tricolor had a golden opportunity to put the final to bed when, in the 62nd minute, VAR awarded a penalty for a Felipe Luis handball. Goalscorer Cano stepped up to the spot but this time Hugo was up to the task pulling off an exceptional save with his feet.
Luis has a chance to atone for his mistake when three minutes from time the ball broke to the defender in the six-yard area but his shot through a crowd of defenders was dragged wide.
The game ended on a sour note as both Flamengo’s Bruno Henrique and Fluminense striker Fred were sent off, instigating a brawl that endured off the pitch.
Despite this, Fluminense held on for a draw on the night to win the Campeonato Carioca title 3-1 on aggregate.
