Striker Duncan McGuire only entered the New York City Red Bulls match in the 87th minute. His Orlando City SC coaches watched intently to see how he performed.
McGuire still isn’t 100% after his shoulder surgery. He was expected to miss the beginning of this season. Yet in his limited time on the pitch against the Red Bulls, all reports were most encouraging.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja said the most important thing about carefully getting McGuire back on the Orlando City pitch is for defense. To get strong enough to enter the MLS post-season, the Lions need the most improvement on defense.
A completely healthy McGuire can help drive them there.

In his short time on the pitch, he got in two key passes. He also won an aerial duel. Coaches sought a glimpse of the competitive and creative Duncan McGuire. They got it.
McGuire injured his shoulder colliding with a defender while trying for a header against the San Jose Earthquakes.
The striker has completely internalized the physical style of play that makes Orlando City successful. But being physical and aggressive in soccer doesn’t mean being reckless. McGuire understands that and can risk fouls without always drawing them.
He is a talented passer, which is why he executed key passes in his recent limited appearance, even though he has not completely recovered.
When it’s time to bank chances during a match, one of McGuire’s greatest strengths is finishing. He knows how to take the chance and get the ball in the net.
