Durham leave it late to defeat Lewes at Maiden Castle | OneFootball

Late goals from Amy Andrews and Poppy Pritchard helped Durham to record a 2-0 victory over Lewes at Maiden Castle this afternoon.

In a game of few goalscoring chances, Andrews broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 81st minute before youngster Pritchard fired home The Wildcats’ second goal deep in stoppage time.

Durham had an opportunity inside the opening minute at Maiden Castle when Jess Clarke fed Andrews but Lewes keeper Sophie Whitehouse was able to claim the ball.

Dee Bradley curled a free-kick over the bar later in the half while Lewes’ only effort of note in the opening 45 minutes was a Hollie Olding strike from long range which flew wide.

Lewes went close early in the second half when Anna Grey’s header went narrowly wide before Maria Farrugia was denied by home keeper Naoisha McAloon.

Durham’s best chance fell to Clarke six yards from goal. She got her head on the end of a free-kick but she was unable to direct her effort on target.

The game looked certain to end goalless but there was to be a late twist when Sarah Wilson’s cross looped over Whitehouse and Andrews got the final touch as the ball landed in the net.

Mollie Lambert found herself clear through on goal in second half injury time but Whitehouse produced a save. Pritchard then fired home the game’s second goal six minutes into time added on.

Durham now have four points on the board from their opening two games while Lewes have suffered back-to-back defeats.
