Eddie Howe opens up on Newcastle future amid England links | OneFootball

Eddie Howe has revealed he hopes to have a "long reign" at Newcastle, despite being linked to the vacant England job.

Magpies boss Howe, who was appointed head coach in November 2021 after a successful tenure at Bournemouth, has long been linked with a move to international football. The rumours grew this summer after Gareth Southgate announced his decision to step down as England boss just days after loosing the Euro 2024 final to Spain.

Since then, Howe's happiness at Newcastle has been brought into question following a summer transfer window which the boss admitted had left him "frustrated" over the club's failures to bolster in key positions.

While Howe has previously admitted that managing England would be 'the ultimate job', the former defender has assured that he is happy in his current role.

"This isn't a loaded answer, but it's difficult to give any reassurance on anything in football," he said when asked if he would consider walking away from the club. "I absolutely love being Newcastle manager and I'm very proud to do it. No part of me is thinking anything other than hopefully a long reign here.

"A lot has changed in terms of PSR [since the Saudi-led takeover in 2021]. The biggest change, the inability to spend, and our need to comply with rules to prevent a points deduction.

"Of course that impacts the ability to progress the club as quickly as maybe they wanted to. I don't think the dream dies, necessarily, it takes a lot longer. We have got to build our revenue streams, that is the biggest thing.

"That is the big thing we need to focus on in the next 10 years, whether I am lucky enough to see any of that, who knows. So the dream is not over, it is just going to take a lot, lot longer."

The Magpies were relatively quiet throughout the summer transfer window, bidding farewell to Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh while welcoming the likes of Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall.

Newcastle have begun their 2024/25 campaign with wins over Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as a draw against Bournemouth. They're set to travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers after the international break.

Meanwhile, Lee Carsley is set to lead England on an interim basis in a double header against the Republic of Ireland and Finland on 7 and 10 September.
