Brentford v Sheffield Wednesday

Scorers: Schade 11′; Gassama 57′

Brentford booked their spot in the EFL Cup quarter finals after a 5-4 penalty shootout win over Sheffield Wednesday.

The hosts took the lead as Kevin Schade ended a 15-game scoreless streak by latching onto a ball over the top and slotting home despite Pierce Charles saving his initial effort.

A moment of misfortune pulled the Owls level when Djeidi Gassama rifled a sublime long-range strike after he had intercepted Mark Flekken’s rolled pass to Schade.

With both teams unable to be separated at the end of normal time, the tie went down to a penalties, where Flekken’s save from Liam Palmer secured the Bees’ progress.

Saints scrape through thriller

Scorers: Harwood-Bellis 19′, Armstrong (PEN) 35′, Bree 88′; Phillips 45′, Cannon 54′

Southampton avoided a potential fourth round upset after running out 3-2 winners over Stoke City.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis opened the scoring early in the first half by rising to meet Mateus Fernandes’ corner with a downward header.

The Saints extended their advantage before the interval as Adam Armstrong converted from the penalty spot after Jaden Dixon had fouled Yukinari Sugawara.

But the Potters halved the deficit on the stroke of half time when Ashley Phillips converted from close range from Sugawara’s deflection inside the area.

Narcís Pelach’s side completed their comeback early in the second half as Tom Cannon pounced at the far post to meet André Vidigal’s deflected cross.

In the final minutes of normal time, defender James Bree clinched a place in the quarter finals for the Premier League outfit by plundering a 25-yard drive.
