Ajax have been drawn against Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in the next round of the Europa League. The Eredivisie leaders were fortunate to get through the latest knock out round, having thrown away a 2-0 aggregate lead early on in the home leg. The side, who were down to 10 men for most of the game against Union St Gilloise, survived the Belgian onslaught to snatch a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win from the penalty spot. Kenneth Taylor’s spot kick was decisive in sending Ajax through, despite Union having an incredible 33 attempts on goal.
Ajax will have to be better over two legs if they are to beat the Bundesliga side. While they may have lost their star player in Omar Marmoush to Manchester City, they are still the third best team in Germany this season. Yet without Marmoush, Ajax will certainly fancy their chances over two legs. The side have really begun to find form under Francesco Farioli in recent weeks and are now leading the title race, something that did not seem possible when PSV were on an unbeaten run to start the campaign.
The two legs will take place one the 6th and 13th of March. The winner will face either AZ Alkmaar or Tottenham.
