Spurs preparing for season-defining Europa League quarter-final second leg

Tottenham know their season rests on Thursday night’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Despite producing one of their better performances in last week’s first leg in north London, Spurs could only draw 1-1 which means they face a difficult task to navigate a way past the German outfit and reach the semi-final.

However, Ange Postecoglou’s side endured the worst possible preparation for the trip to Germany, losing 4-2 away at Wolves at the weekend which was their 17th defeat of the the Premier League campaign.

Meanwhile, Frankfurt cruised to a 3-0 win over Heidenheim on Sunday and, in the process, boosted their chances of qualifying for the Champions League via the Bundesliga route.

It is the biggest game of the season so far for Spurs and anything less than a win will pile even more pressure on Postecoglou.

Tottenham are set to welcome back captain Heung-min Son and Wilson Odobert back into the squad after they missed the defeat to Wolves. Kevin Danso could also return from injury, though he is unlikely to start.

Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie are set to return to the XI after being rested completely at the weekend, with Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall pushing to start after making substitute appearances at Molineux.

Dejan Kulusevski also got some minutes on his return from injury, but it remains to be seen if he’s ready to start.

Frankfurt are set to be without first-choice goalkeeper, and captain, Kevin Trapp but Kaua Santos proved last week he is a capable understudy, whilst highly-rated striker Hugo Ekitike is expected to lead the line.

It felt like Tottenham needed to take a lead into the second leg, so last week’s 1-1 draw was certainly a missed opportunity and they are likely to rue a series of missed chances.

Frankfurt are very strong at home and their supporters are expected to create a hostile atmosphere - something this young Spurs have struggled with in Europe this season having lost away at Galatasaray and scraping a draw with Rangers in Glasgow.

There will be goals, with the hosts edging it.
