Emanuel Aguilera has defended the style of play América are employing under manager Santiago Solari.
Las Águilas have become a very functional outfit under the Argentinian’s stewardship, but a very effective one as well.
They currently top the Apertura table with five wins and two draws from their opening seven games, and are well placed to reach the Concacaf Champions League final.
“The numbers reflect it, if we are there it is for something, it is because surely we are doing things well, more than others,” Aguilera told TUDN.
“Whether they like the forms or not, that depends on each person, but we are there first, fighting the first places as we did last tournament.”
The centre-back admitted that he would be happy to play a more expansive game, but went on to argue that – in the end – it is a results business.
“We would love to win 3-0 every game because we would suffer less than necessary but we can’t,” the 32-year-old said.
“There is a rival who does things well, that prevents you from doing things the way you want, but there we are fighting for the first places and it is the idea, to continue in that tune.”
América host Mazatlán in the league on Saturday, before travelling to Philadelphia Union on Wednesday to defend their 2-0 advantage in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.
