Empoli president Fabrizio Corsi hailed his side’s determination after they avoided relegation thanks to an injury time goal in their late 2-1 win over Roma on Sunday evening.
The Tuscans achieved salvation in the final moments of the season when M’Baye Niang scored a winner in the 93rd minute—subsequently sending Frosinone and ex-Roma boss Eusebio Di Francesco down to Serie B.
“We”re still trying to realise the magnitude of this achievement,” Corsi told DAZN. “It’s been a very tough season, but the team has grown a lot since January.”
“We’ve done something extraordinary. I’ve received a lot of messages of encouragement this week, I’ve never faced a situation this difficult. However, we did well tonight to get a win.”
He added, “We’ve stood by the team, which has done an extraordinary job. The manager [Davide Nicola] is a specialist in situations like this. From a character point of view, he is extraordinary; he immediately gave the team a structure. Now let’s enjoy this salvation and look forward.”
