Thomas Tuchel has been confirmed as the new England head coach.

The former Chelsea man moves into international management for the first time by taking over from current interim boss Lee Carsley, who will return to his role as U21 boss.

Tuchel signed a contract last week and will take over on January 1 on an initial 18-month deal which will conclude after the 2026 World Cup.

He will be assisted by Anthony Barry, who he previously worked with at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country and it has given me some incredible moments already,” Tuchel stated.

“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”

The 51-year-old has been out of work since a 14-month spell with the Bundesliga giants was truncated at the end of the previous campaign.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel steered Chelsea to their second Champions League success by beating Manchester City in the 2021 final.
