Arnold Clark Cup action wrapped up on Wednesday with two final games between Spain, Canada, Germany, and England.
Here is what went down.
Scorers: White 15′, Bright 84′, Kirby 90+3′; Magull 41′
As a result of Spain’s earlier result, there was a chance to see England either finish bottom of the table or win the tournament in their final match against Germany.
And Sarina Wiegman’s side welcomed the pressure as they hit the ground running against their opponents right from the first whistle.
Eventually, the connection between Women’s Super League stars Fran Kirby and Ellen White put the Lionesses in front.
However, Germany showed they weren’t down and out just yet and capitalised on a defensive error allowing Lina Magull to send her pin-point free-kick past Ellie Roebuck for 1-1 just before the break.
Coming out afterward the match continued to be a nervy affair with both sides pushing for a second goal.
And the hosts would have to wait until the death to be crowned champions as Millie Bright and Kirby wrapped up a 3-1 win.
Scorer: Putellas 21′
The match at Molineux stadium was a lively affair as both teams looked for the breakthrough with threatening counterattacks at either end.
Over time, Spain’s Barcelona core was able to pick apart Canada’s backline with Jenni Hermoso dummying the ball only to see Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas stab it home.
However, the reigning Olympic champions didn’t shy away. After conceding, the Canucks had a brilliant opportunity to go level but Jordyn Huitema’s header struck the crossbar.
Things remained a one-goal game heading into the second half with the match still up for grabs.
Spain continued to dominate possession and almost doubled their lead but Putellas’ effort hit the crossbar. Meanwhile, Canada came close to equalising late on but a wide-open Nichelle Prince sent her effort over.
In the end, the early strike was enough and sent Spain top of the table before England’s match.
