It’s certainly no surprise that Nico Schlotterbeck has been courted by several clubs, especially those English Premier League clubs with gobs of money to spend. The German International has become one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent players during their worst season in over a decade.

Sky journalist Patrick Berger has recently reported that Newcastle United were so interested in Nico Schlotterbeck that they held a video call with the defender. The reported call took place before Schlotterbeck’s season-ending injury. However, the EPL club remains interested.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, Nico Schlotterbeck’s preference was always to stay in Dortmund. The player is comfortable and happy at BVB, and it seems he’d prefer staying at the Signal Iduna Park, even in the potential absence of European football next season.

Prior to his injury, Schlotterbeck had been one of BVB’s best players and had even been touted to be Emre Can’s successor as club captain. As a fan of both Shlotterbeck and Borussia Dortmund, it makes me happy seeing Schlotti’s commitment. Many players could be enticed by moves abroad, especially if BVB fails to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. However, I believe we have a leader in Schlotterbeck, and I hope he stays for a long time.

Nico Schlotterbeck has made 84 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund since arriving in 2022. He’s scored six for the club as a central defender, and fans will remember him for his crucial role in helping Borussia Dortmund reach last year’s UEFA Champions League Final. Thankfully for BVB fans, Schlotterbeck's story isn't over yet.
