Manchester United Opinion: Why Man United must offload Alexis Sanchez?

According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to give Alexis Sanchez another chance to save his Old Trafford career.

The Chilean international’s time at Manchester United has been nothing short of a disaster. The forward has struggled immensely with form and fitness since arriving at Old Trafford in the January transfer window in 2018 from Arsenal.

Recently, the 30-year-old was on international duty with Chile at the Copa America and appeared to pick up a hamstring injury during his country’s third/fourth play-off against Argentina.

It is believed that United have been open to selling Sanchez in the summer transfer window but his sky-high wages have proved to be a stumbling block. He has been woeful for the majority of his 18-month Old Trafford career and scored only twice last season but is contracted to the club until 2022.

Going by Solskjaer’s first press conference ahead of his club’s first pre-season game, Sanchez is here to stay at Old Trafford, at least for another season. But the Red Devils boss must change his stance and look to offload the Chilean from the club’s books this summer.

Sanchez endured an injury-hit 2018/19 season as he started only 19 games for United. Even when he was fit the 30-year-old failed to make any impression, neither under Jose Mourinho nor Solskjaer.

The Chilean international has found the back of the net only five times while creating nine assists across all competitions so far at United. He hasn’t lived up to the hype which had surrounded his move from Arsenal in 2018.

Once upon a time, Sanchez was possibly one of the most dangerous players in Europe. He was a tireless and tenacious worker in the final third, devastating with his movement and clinical in front of goal.

The Chilean could win matches on his own and was a real leader on the pitch during his time at Arsenal. However, the 30-year-old is a shadow of his former self as he is not the same player he was at the Emirates Stadium.

There have been numerous false dawns for Sanchez to reignite his career at United. His dramatic winner against Newcastle at Old Trafford, a goal against his former employers Arsenal in the FA Cup and a good display from the bench at Barcelona in the Champions League.

Each time he looked like kicking on, Sanchez struggled to build on and overall has failed to live up to the expectations of United’s iconic no.7 jersey.

Verdict

It is tough to imagine Sanchez getting back his mojo and eventually reviving his career at Old Trafford. He clearly appears to be a liability for Solskjaer’s side right now and the Red Devils should cut their losses on the diminutive forward.
