Blues linked with whole host of strikers but Italian backs Nicolas Jackson to shine

Enzo Maresca says Chelsea do not need to sign a “killer” striker, insisting Nicolas Jackson will soon hit form in front of goal.

While Chelsea are the joint-second top scorers in the Premier League this season, they are winless in five league matches stretching back to mid-December, partly due to wasteful finishing.

Striker Jackson has led the line this season and impressed on occasion, but his nine league goals mean he has found the net from just 17 per cent of his shots this term.

Chelsea, who host Wolves on Monday night, have been linked with January moves for a whole host of strikers — speculation which Maresca deemed a “disaster” on Friday — but the club are hopeful that Jackson will become more clinical if given time.

The Senegal international scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Blues last season but also drew criticism for misfiring from a number of presentable chances.

Asked whether the Blues are looking to make a statement signing in attack, Maresca said: “No, because I think by being a little bit more lucky, we can convert and can score more goals.

“It’s not about [signing] a ‘killer’. In this moment, the one that’s probably missing the goal is Nico. But the way he is working is fantastic, and we don’t have any doubt that Nico is soon going to start scoring goals.”
