Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has been explaining how one Chelsea transfer target is ‘a bit different’ to Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

It might sound strange as to why Maresca is even comparing a Chelsea transfer target to the Everton striker, but it makes more sense in context below.

Sources: Two Bournemouth defenders ‘ones to watch’ for Chelsea in January, Joao Felix staying, Goalkeeper on hold, more…

Maresca saw his side defeated 2-0 by Ipswich Town on Monday night in their final game of 2024, and it was a bit of a shock result and a bit of a terrible performance from his side, especially at the back.

For me, Ipswich just showed that they wanted it more and had more hunger and desire. They used the crowd to fight for every ball, and defensively they threw their bodies on the line at every attack.

Chelsea were all over them and dominated the game, as expected, because let’s face it, this is a very poor team. But they are the ones who won 2-0 on the night, so they obviously did a lot right, and Chelsea did a lot wrong.

Delap was superb

Delap scores against Chelsea

In words picked up by Football London, Maresca was asked:

Your two centre-backs did very well against a physical striker vs Everton. What could they have done better today?

He responded:

“I think Liam [Delap] is a bit different to [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin in terms of skills. But I think first-half we conceded a penalty and then we conceded one or two more chances in the same way; long ball for Liam, try to defend the ball and shoot.

“In the second-half, it was copy and paste. Again, we conceded the goal because we unfortunately made a mistake. Then they had some more moments, exactly the same; a longer ball for Liam and he fights against everyone and shoots. This is Liam. Liam and Calvert-Lewin, I think they’re a bit different.”
