FC Barcelona once again showed their superiority on the pitch last night as they beat one of the better sides in La Liga, Girona, with a 4-1 scoreline. The Catalans have now scored 11 goals in their last two matches, as they went into the September international break after a 7-0 win against Real Valladolid.
The team’s forward line has been playing at an exceptional level for the last few matches, and as Mundo Deportivo has reported, one of the Barcelona defenders, Eric Garcia, also recognized this fact as he spoke after the match against Girona.
The Spaniard had spent the last season on loan at Girona, and he admitted that this was a special match for him:
“Coming back here has been special, I’ve seen many friends, but the victory was very important for us. The coach asks us to press high, to take risks with an advanced line, and to keep doing it throughout the whole game.”
Furthermore, Eric Garcia highlighted a key change that is already paying off for the Catalan giants and yielding positive results:
“The team is in great physical shape, and we’ve slightly changed the way we press. The forwards put in a lot of running, and we kept pressing high even without Ferran, with one man down. It’s a change in mentality, and it’s paying off, especially because we have game-changing players up front.”
One of the moments from this match that has generated some controversy is when the ball hit Inigo Martinez’s arm in the Barcelona penalty box. The referee first gave the penalty, but then overturned it after consulting VAR. Eric Garcia believed that this was the right decision:
“It was an unintentional action because the ball came from Balde when it hit Iñigo.”
The improvement in the team’s attitude and spirit has been quite clear since the start of this season. Hopefully, the Blaugranes will be able to sustain their form as they enter a highly dense schedule with the Champions League starting for them this Thursday.
