ESPN pundit Julien Laurens has questioned how Chelsea can be a serious club if Enzo Maresca continues to pick Robert Sanchez in goal.

The Blues slipped to a 3-1 defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon, with Sanchez once again making another costly error to allow Erling Haaland to give City the lead.

The defeat means it’s now one win in the last seven league matches for Enzo Maresca’s side, with the Blues dropping to sixth in the league.

Laurens questions Chelsea over Sanchez

Chelsea and Maresca took the decision last summer to make Sanchez the number one for this season, with Djordje Petrovic sent on loan to Strasbourg, despite out performing the Spaniard during the last campaign.

The Blues also signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal last summer, but the Dane hasn’t been given much of an opportunity to show what he can do.

Sanchez has made a number of costly errors this season, with the mistake against City taking his total to a league high of five for mistakes leading to goals.

Maresca has defended the 27-year-old on a number of occasions publicly this season, but has acknowledged the former Brighton man must do a lot better.

Laurens was scathing in his criticism of Sanchez and questioned how Chelsea could consider themselves a serious club with him in goal.

He took to X.com and said:

“How can Chelsea be a serious club and a serious project when the manager and the people at the top of the club think it’s ok to have Robert Sanchez as a goalkeeper?!?”

It will be interesting to see what decision Maresca makes for the game against West Ham on 3rd February, and Sanchez was booed by supporters after his error against City.

Maresca surely has to give Jorgensen a run of games because continuing with Sanchez could be a mistake which costs the Blues Champions League football next season.
