Euro 2024: Toney features in final as England lose to Spain | OneFootball

Brentford striker Ivan Toney came on as a substitute during England's 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday evening.

Nico Williams put Luis de la Fuente's side ahead, before Cole Palmer superbly equalised with 15 minutes to play. However, with the clock about to tick into the 90th minute, Mikel Oyarzabal converted from close range to win it for the now four-time European champions.

Toney came on for Phil Foden just after Spain's second goal in a bid to try and rescue the game and take it to extra-time in Berlin, but the four minutes of added time ticked by and the Three Lions were unable to avoid defeat.

That was the Brentford striker's third appearance at the tournament, where he recorded an assist for Harry Kane's winning goal against Slovakia in the round of 16. He also coolly scored his penalty in the shootout win over Switzerland in the quarter-final.

Also in the England squad were former Bees Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins, who are both currently at Aston Villa. Konsa deputised exquisitely for the suspended Marc Guehi in that Switzerland clash, as well as impressing in two other appearances off the bench.

Watkins - who Brentford signed from Exeter City as a 21-year-old, before he played 143 times and scored 49 goals for the club - netted one of the most iconic goals in England history, as he came off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner against the Netherlands in the semi-final. He made a further two substitute appearances.

Another former Bees man, David Raya was a part of the Spain squad that lifted the trophy. Raya, who left the club on a permanent deal to join Arsenal this summer, made one appearance: a 1-0 win over Albania in their final group game.

Raya's former goalkeeping team-mate Thomas Strakosha, who was a Brentford player during the tournament before recently joining AEK Athens on a free transfer, also played in that Spain v Albania fixture, as well as his country's two other group games. The Eagles finished bottom of Group B.

Another of the club's keepers, Mark Flekken was in the Netherlands squad that reached the semi-final, before that defeat to England. He was an unused substitute in all six of their games at the tournament.

Elsewhere, four Bees players were part of the Denmark squad that were knocked out of the competition by hosts Germany in the last 16. Zanka, Christian Nørgaard, Mathias Jensen and Mikkel Damsgaard were all in Germany as their country made it out of Group C.

Nørgaard made three substitute appearances for Kasper Hjulmand's side, while Damsgaard played the final half-hour in the 1-1 draw with England.
