It was a day full of emotion as 133 years of football at Goodison Park came to an end, with Everton signing off in the best possible way - a 2-0 win over Southampton.
The atmosphere was electric from the first whistle, with fans in full voice as the farewell celebrations got underway. The players matched the mood on the pitch, and Iliman Ndiaye gave the perfect start, opening the scoring just six minutes in.
Following a bit of a scrap for the ball, Ndiaye pounced, drove towards goal, cut inside the box, and slotted a low shot into the bottom left corner.
Beto had the ball in the net twice in quick succession, but both goals were ruled out for offside. The second was especially frustrating for David Moyes' side, as it capped off a brilliant team move, only to be denied by the flag.
Just before the break, the hosts did find their second - and this one counted. Dwight McNeil took aim from just outside the box, but his strike took a deflection and fell kindly to Ndiaye inside the are, who picked it up, rounded Aaron Ramsdale and calmly slotted it into the empty net.
The second half had more of a testimonial feel, with the intensity dropping slightly, but there was still time for Jordan Pickford to make his mark - pulling off a brilliant late save to deny Cameron Archer and preserve the clean sheet.
While the men’s team ended their Goodison Park chapter in style, the stadium isn’t done just yet – Everton Women will now make it their home. As for the men, they’ll begin a new era next season at the Hill Wilkinson Stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock.
