Everton are looking to beat Manchester United and a host of other clubs to the signature of Angel Gomes, as per reports.
In 2022, Everton signed James Garner from United on a permanent transfer. The Red Devils’ academy product has turned out to be a shrewd signing for the Toffees, establishing himself as a key part of their midfield over the last three seasons.
Now, Everton are looking to sign another product of United’s academy to add some creativity to their midfield.
According to Givemesport, the Merseyside outfit are keen to win the race for Gomes this summer.
The Englishman, who left United for Lille in 2020, will be available as a free agent upon the expiration of his contract at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in June.
David Moyes is understood to be an “admirer” of Gomes and his desire has apparently convinced Everton to push for the signing of the 24-year-old despite competition from a number of Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur.
It is understood that United have “looked tentatively” into the possibility of bringing Gomes back to Old Trafford but at this moment, it is Everton who have stepped up their efforts to get the deal over the line.
Ruben Amorim has often asked Bruno Fernandes to receive the ball from the back and progress it higher up the field.
The arrival of a new holding midfielder could help the Portuguese head coach deploy Fernandes behind the striker more frequently.
In that regard, Gomes, who has impressed with his press-resistance and passing ability as a deep-lying playmaker, could prove to be a good option for United, especially considering their tight transfer budget.
However, the club’s hierarchy would have to act swiftly to overtake Everton.
Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Olympique de Marseille are also interested in signing the ex-United talent.
