It is an ongoing saga, and there is no clear ending insight. With the future of Carlo Ancelotti up in the air, this also affects Bayer Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso’s future as he is seen as the number one option to replace the Italian.

Due to this, Leverkusen have to prepare for a possible departure and have begun to look at other candidates to replace the Spaniard in the summer.

The most recent name linked to the job is former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. Talks with the Dutchman have yet to take place, but he is seen as number one on Leverkusen’s list.

When it comes to continuing with a Spanish head coach, plenty of names have been mentioned. Former Barcelona head coach Xavi is said to be on die Werkself’s list, reports kicker, while Real Sociedad head coach Imanol Alguacil is also of interest as he leaves the San Sebastian side in the summer. Local news in Como, Italy, has even said that Leverkusen have held a secret meeting with Cesc Fabregas.

Sport Bild adds five other names to the list.

Sandro Wagner is one of them, following his departure as Germany’s national team assistant coach in the summer. While former St.Pauli and current Brighton manager Fabian Hürzler is also on the list, and sporting director Simon Rolfes has followed the German’s progress for several years and he plays a fitting style of play for Leverkusen.

On top of them, former Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis, who is currently managing Monterrey in Mexico, and Francesco Farioli, who is leading Ajax to the Eredivisie title and has a €5m release clause, are candidates. While Former Mainz head coach Kasper Hjulmand, previously the Denmark manager, was an alternative to Alonso back in October 2022, he is also of interest again.
