Former Manchester United star Katie Zelem has officially joined National Women’s Soccer League club Angel City.

United acquired Zelem in 2018 when the club relaunched its women’s team. She was named captain from the 2019/20 campaign.

Last term, Zelem played a crucial role as Marc Skinner’s side beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Wembley in the FA Cup final – the first major price of silverware for United Women.

The 28-year-old made 161 appearances in all competitions for the Reds and in that time, scored 32 goals.

She left United earlier this summer upon the expiry of her contract.

Zelem’s switch to Angel City was teased by the Los Angeles outfit with a voice note posted on their official X account, where the name “Katie” was bleeped out.

The midfielder said to Angel City’s official website, “I’m thrilled to sign for Angel City and take on this exciting new challenge.”

“The opportunity to compete in the NWSL, one of the most competitive leagues in the world, is a huge step in my career.”

“I’m eager to test myself in a new league, against top players whilst contributing to the success of this ambitious club.”

General Manager of Angel City Angela Hucles Mangano remarked about the ex-United star, “Katie Zelem is a wonderful addition to our squad at the perfect time.”

“She has honed leadership skills at high levels as the captain of Manchester United, is a skilled midfielder with an elite-level football acumen, and her desire to bring championships to LA was palpable upon first communication.”

“We are excited to welcome her.”

The 12-time capped England international’s contract with Angel City runs until 2026.
