Former Serie A referee Gianpaolo Calvarese took stock of Davide Massa’s decision to disallow Lautaro Martinez’s goal against Atalanta.
According to Tuttosport via TMW, Calvarese refused to agree with Massa’s call, admitting it’s ‘debatable.’
Simone Inzaghi’s team pulled off a crucial 2-0 victory at the Gewiss Stadium last night.
Indeed, Carlos Augusto and El Toro scored in the second half to seal Inter’s eighth straight win against La Dea.
However, after a relatively quiet first half, the game gained intensity in the second half, especially after Inter’s goal.
The first incident took place in the 72nd minute.
Lautaro thought he had doubled Inter’s lead, only for Massa to overturn his goal for a foul in the build-up.
After that, the experienced Serie A referee showed three red cards.
Ederson and Gian Piero Gasperini received their marching orders as Atalanta’s frustration boiled over at 0-1.
Meanwhile, Alessandro Bastoni picked up a needless second booking a few minutes from the final whistle.
“After officiating the Champions League first-leg game between PSG and Liverpool at the Parc des Princes, Davide Massa returned to referee a big match in Serie A,” the analysis read.
“At the Gewiss Stadium, he managed the overall tension well with his experience.

“The main incidents occurred in the second half, interrupted for more than six minutes to allow medical assistance for a fan.
“He disallowed Lautaro’s goal at 0-1 due to a prior shoulder charge by Lautaro on Djimsiti. However, he made no attempt to play the ball.
“The foul is debatable, but it falls within the referee’s discretion.
“Then came the three red cards.
“First, Ederson, who openly protested against the referee and sarcastically applauded him, earning two yellow cards in seconds.
“Then Gasperini, who protested from the bench.
“And finally Bastoni, who, already booked and having taken a risk earlier, took down Maldini.”
