Gianluigi Donnarumma (26) continued his fine recent run of form with a game-defining display at Villa Park as Paris Saint-Germain edged past Aston Villa and into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
PSG held a 3-1 advantage from the first leg and then proceeded to race into a two-goal lead in Birmingham, however, Luis Enrique’s side were pegged back, firstly by Youri Tielemans and then by a quickfire brace from John McGinn and Ezri Konsa. PSG, however, clung on, edging through 5-4 on aggregate.
To secure their progression, they were reliant on Donnarumma, who provided big saves to deny Marcus Rashford, Tielemans and then Marco Asensio. His performance earned him an 8 rating from Get French Football News.
The Italian earned high praise post-match. “As always, Donnarumma was excellent. I don’t know what to say, he is a great goalkeeper and also an extraordinary person off the pitch,” said Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in a mixed zone interview attended by GFFN. Luis Enrique had just one word to describe his goalkeeper: “Sensational.”
