The German oversaw the Canaries’ run to the play-offs, but a 4-0 loss to Leeds United ended their hopes of promotion to the Premier League.
The defeat proved to be Wagner’s final game in charge at Carrow Road, with the Championship side now looking for his successor.
Sporting director Ben Knapper will be involved in the process to replace the former Huddersfield Town boss, making his first managerial appointment since taking on the role in late 2023.
The 52-year-old had been in charge of the Norfolk outfit since January 2023, but Knapper has opted for a change following the end of the campaign.
FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes has claimed he would like to see Arsenal coach Carlos Cuesta join the club as manager.
While he believes the likes of Liam Rosenior or Steve Cooper coming in would be solid arrivals, he is more excited by the prospect of a young, attacking coach taking over the team.
“I would ideally like Carlos Cuesta,” Downes told Football League World.
“I wouldn’t be too unhappy with Liam Rosenior, but I don’t know because that Hull squad was quite good and he didn’t manage to get [them into the] play-offs.
“Steve Cooper would be okay, I’m not sure about the style of play, it’s a bit defensive.
“That is better when you go into the Premier League, so that could work.
“But generally, I think we need a younger manager that’s going to give youth a chance and play more exciting, attacking football.”
Cuesta knows Knapper from their time together at Arsenal, with the Norwich sporting director having previously worked as the loan manager at the London club.
The Spaniard works alongside Mikel Arteta as part of his coaching staff and was previously linked with taking over at Carrow Road, but the latest reports have suggested a move is not on the cards.
The coach lacks managerial experience but is still quite young so may look to continue his apprenticeship under the Arsenal manager for the time being.
The top flight club missed out on the Premier League title last weekend, so Cuesta may want to remain at the Emirates to help the Gunners earn a 14th title triumph, and a first since 2004.
Leicester City appointed Pep Guardiola’s assistant Enzo Maresca last summer and enjoyed a lot of success.
That is the blueprint Norwich would be hoping to copy if they were looking to bring someone like Cuesta in as manager.
Knapper knows the 28-year-old quite well, so will know how ready he is to become the main manager at a club.
Working under a coach like Arteta has been a great experience for Cuesta, but he may feel more time is needed before making the jump to becoming the main manager elsewhere.
It would've been an exciting appointment but it seems it is not to be.
