As it stands, Burton Albion, Cambridge United, Shrewsbury Town and Crawley Town occupy the bottom four spots in the division, which means they will have to play catch-up, unless they want to be playing League Two football next season.

Bristol Rovers, Northampton Town and Peterborough United are the teams to catch if either of the four relegation zone occupants wish to escape the drop, but all three sides have hit better form recently, making the bottom four's job much harder.

Ahead of what will be an exciting final nine games, Football League World spoke exclusively to Wycombe Wanderers legend and pundit Joe Jacobson to gather his thoughts on who will be relegated this season.

Joe Jacobson expects the bottom four in League One to remain the same

The battle at the bottom of the League One table will prove to be fascinating heading into the final nine matches. FLW quizzed former left-back Jacobson on whether he believed the current bottom four would remain the same at the conclusion of the season.

The 38-year-old said: "If I'm honest, I think the bottom four now is going to be the four that go down.

"I believe that if Gary Bowyer, Neil Harris, and Gareth Ainsworth were all there throughout the whole season and got the transfer window in the summer and the winter, I believe all three of them [Burton, Cambridge, Shrewsbury] would've probably stayed up.

"I believe they've all had spells since they've gone in of picking up points, picking up wins. But undoubtedly, it's the time at the start of the season for all three teams that cost them.

"It's a shame for me, especially with Shrewsbury being my old team. Bristol Rovers have got too much and Peterborough have hit a little bit more form.

"At the bottom, these teams are struggling to put a couple of wins together, so to claw back six points at this stage with a worse goal difference is too much of an ask."

Poor starts have cost bottom four as relegation looms

None of the clubs currently occupying the relegation places will go down without a fight, but it seems that it might be too little too late for some of them to find form.

As Jacobson alluded to, Burton, Cambridge, and Shrewsbury's campaigns may have already been doomed when they appointed their new managers. The inconsistency they've displayed hasn't been enough to add to their low points tally when they took over their respective positions.

Teams above the bottom four have started to pick up points on a more consistent basis, which has seen the gap between 21st and 20th increase to six points. With nine matches to go, the pressure is on for the bottom four to find some consistency which they've yet to unearth this season.

It will be interesting to see if Jacobson's predictions come true when all is said and done. Each game that goes by will add to the pressure being felt in each camp, but a couple of back-to-back wins could change the complexion of the relegation battle.
