Exclusive – Signe Carstens talks up Celtic’s chances in Women’s Champions League

The Celtic Star: How have you found working with Elena at Celtic so far?

Signe Carstens: “It’s been really good. It’s been nice. I’ve enjoyed it very much so so far so good!”

The Celtic Star: You got your first call-up for Denmark’s under-23s squad back in February. Are you hopeful that you can break into more international squads being at Celtic?

Signe Carstens

Signe Carstens: “Yeah, of course. That is one of the reasons why I chose to come here. But also just showing myself off and I know that if I’m going to do well and I’m performing then I’ll also be on the national team.”

The Celtic Star: Were there any other factors apart from international dreams that made you decide Celtic was the right move for you?

Signe Carstens: “I think the biggest reason was the head coach Elena. I knew her from before and I know how she wants to play but also what she demands of her players. So I think that was probably the biggest reason.”

The Celtic Star: There are a lot of players in the squad this season. How are you finding the competition for places?

Signe Carstens: “I think it’s good that there’s competition. It makes you want to get better each and every day. So I think it’s really good. You can see that everyone is pushing themselves to show themselves off and to have Elena choose them for the games. So it’s good.”

The Celtic Star: You made your debut at Celtic Park on opening day against Dundee United. How good of an experience was that?

Signe Carstens: “It was amazing going out on that pitch, it was really nice. Also the stadium is just a really nice stadium and then having the fans there made it even more special. But yeah, it was a special moment.”

The Celtic Star: And I’m sure it was fantastic to get a goal on your debut as well.

Signe Carstens: “Yes, of course. Couldn’t have done it much better! It was really nice to score my first goal on my debut.”

The Celtic Star: Looking ahead to the game against Motherwell, you didn’t feature against Glasgow City but are you hopeful that you can make your first Excelsior Stadium appearance tomorrow?

Signe Carstens:: “Yes, I really hope that I’m going to be able to get on the starting 11 and then get a good performance and show more of who I am as a player.”

The Celtic Star: How has training been this week in preparation for the game?

Signe Carstens: “It’s been good. There has not been that much training because of all the games but the training we’ve been having has been good.”

The Celtic Star: You’ve played in the Champions League before but how excited are you to play in Celtic colours in that competition?

Signe Carstens: “I’m really excited about it. It was also one of the reasons why I chose to come here because you want to play in those tournaments. So I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Celtic Star: And do you think that Elena can take Celtic far in the Champions League?

Signe Carstens: “I think she can. I think the team this year is in good hands. I think we will be able to do well in that competition, yeah.”
