Veteran Ajax stopper Remko Pasveer is hopeful of a new Ajax contract for next season. The 41-year-old’s current deal is soon to expire, yet following an interview with the Het Parool newspaper, it’s clear he would like to continue with Ajax for longer with Champions League aspirations firmly in mind.
Pasveer signed a one-year extension with Ajax last summer after lengthy negotiations. “For me, it was either Ajax or quit,” he told the Amsterdam outlet.
The two-time Oranje international has since regained his starting spot between the sticks in the Dutch capital. Despite turning 41 at the beginning of November, the man with seven clean sheets so far this term is not thinking about the end of his career just yet. “My contract expires at the end of this season, but I still want to continue. I feel valuable and fit.”
While he’s determined to keep going for as long as possible, the keeper did breach the topic of post-career life, “I do see myself becoming a goalkeeper coach. I think that guys I played with, like Stijn Schaars, Daley Blind or Dusan Tadic, will become coaches someday. I would like to join their technical staff. That seems fantastic to me. Time will tell.”
In the meantime, Pasveer is hopeful of further success in Amsterdam. “I hope for the championship, but I will definitely take Champions League qualification. PSV are very stable and we are not where we want to be with Ajax yet. We are not yet playing the type of game we want. Dominating, sending opponents home with 4-0 or 5-0. But that takes time. You cannot expect the new coaching staff to be able to do that within six months. It will take one or two years.”
