Harvey Elliott has reportedly picked up an injury whilst training with England's U21s that could see him out of action until the end of October.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Elliott has fractured his foot and is expected to be sidelined until after the next international break in October.

The 21-year-old has faced a tough start to the season, only featuring for seven minutes in Liverpool's opening three Premier League games but now it looks like he is set to miss at least seven matches for the Reds.

The injury comes at a bad time for Liverpool who are set to begin their defence of the Carabao Cup and also enter the Champions League after a year absence before Elliott will be back fit.

Elliott's Liverpool role

It is shaping up to be a frustrating campaign for the England U21, after enjoying a good end to last season and looking promising in pre-season he has struggled to break into Slot's team.

Arne Slot seems to have locked in his preferred midfield three of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch but Mac Allister has picked up an injury on international duty with Argentina and will have to travel back from South America before Liverpool face Nottingham Forest.

This could have been the perfect opportunity for Elliott to get his first competitive start of Slot's tenure but now he faces an injury layoff of his own.

Elliott is also capable of playing on the right wing but with Mohamed Salah in incredible form and Federico Chiesa signing for Liverpool this summer his opportunities there this campaign may be limited.

Despite this injury lay-off, Elliott may have a chance to prove himself once he is back fit as Liverpool's fixture list does not ease up at any point before Christmas and there will be plenty of minutes up for grabs.
