Fabrizio Romano: Scott McTominay negotiating “payoff” to leave Man United

Scott McTominay is close to joining Napoli for €30 million but negotiations with Manchester United over a “payoff” are the “main part to fix” to confirm the deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

McTominay, 27, has been the subject of interest from a host of clubs across Europe this summer with United open to selling their academy graduate to help generate funds for further incoming transfers.

Erik ten Hag is a big fan of the Scottish international, and would be open to him remaining at Old Trafford, but there is understanding over the need for his departure.

McTominay is one of a select few players at the club who could be sold for a considerable fee and his homegrown status means his transfer fee would constitute ‘pure profit’ from a financial fair play perspective.

As relayed by The Peoples Person here, Napoli reached an agreement with United to sign McTominay for €30 million (£25.45 million) earlier today, with a sell-on percentage clause included in negotiations.

Romano reveals McTominay has “accepted Napoli and their project” while Italian media contend the Scot is “dying” to play under Napoli manager, Antonio Conte.

The 27-year-old’s sale will play a key part in United finalising their protracted pursuit of PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte – the Uruguayan international the club have identified as their number one target to upgrade Ten Hag’s midfield unit this summer.

Tweet: “Scott McTominay has already accepted Napoli and their project. Details to be discussed about his payoff, similar to Wan-Bissaka. This is the main part to fix + personal terms. Club to club agreement done with Man United for €30m fee (add-ons included) plus sell-on clause.”

It’s believed McTominay could travel to Italy next week with a view towards a medical being completed on Tuesday. However, Romano states there are “details to be discussed” between United officials and McTominay’s representatives over “his payoff, similar to Wan-Bissaka.”

Wan-Bissaka joined West Ham earlier this month in a £15 million move after five years in Manchester. The 26-year-old fullback was reported to have demanded a £7 million payoff to return to the nation’s capital, almost jeopardising the deal in the process.

And it was a similar story last summer when the Hammers agreed a deal to sign Harry Maguire, only for the centre-back’s payoff demands to be rejected by United’s American owners, the Glazer family and the transfer fall through.

There is no indication that talks over this payoff will impact McTominay’s move to Napoli but it does offer a timely reminder of the incompetent stewardship the club has been subject to under the Glazers’ watch; one which INEOS – who gained full control over the football operation at Old Trafford in February – have been battling against all summer.
