Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Samuele Ricci, previously linked with Liverpool, has signed a long-term contract with Torino, committing his future to the club until June 2028. This development significantly alters Liverpool’s potential midfield reinforcements for the foreseeable future.
Liverpool’s transfer strategy has been clear for months: act only if an irresistible opportunity arises. Manager Arne Slot, speaking in December, reiterated his satisfaction with the current squad:
“I said many times at the beginning of the season, I’m so, so happy with the squad we have. That’s not to say that if there will be a chance in the market [we won’t sign anyone]. This club has always shown that they are going for it.”
This pragmatic stance is a hallmark of Liverpool’s recent transfer policy, with impactful signings like Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz arriving only when the timing and deal were optimal.
Ricci, just 23 years old, has been a standout for Torino and was heavily linked with Liverpool in December 2024. Reports suggested that the Reds admired his ability to navigate tight spaces, maintain possession under pressure, and deliver high pass completion rates.
Fabrizio Romano’s confirmation of Ricci’s contract extension comes as a blow for any club eyeing the Italian midfielder:
“Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci has signed [a] new long-term deal at the club until June 2028. Agreement sealed,” Romano shared on X.
With Ricci’s market value previously estimated at €35 million, his new deal likely increases any potential transfer fee, making him a less feasible option for Liverpool in the near future.
After the summer pursuit of Martin Zubimendi ended without success, Liverpool’s midfield depth remains a topic of interest. Despite summer arrivals and the addition of Federico Chiesa, who has struggled for Premier League minutes, the team could still benefit from a technically secure midfielder like Ricci.
Liverpool’s patience in the January window suggests that their eyes remain on summer opportunities. While Ricci’s new contract complicates matters, the Reds have shown they are capable of securing top targets when the moment is right.

Ricci’s contract extension is a frustrating development but not a surprising one. As a young midfielder with composure and technical ability, Ricci seemed tailor-made for Arne Slot’s system. His ability to excel under pressure and dictate play could have added another dimension to the squad.
However, Liverpool fans have reasons to remain optimistic. Slot’s careful planning and trust in the current squad reflect a long-term vision rather than short-term fixes. The club’s history of landing transformative players like Alisson, Van Dijk, and Diaz shows that patience often pays dividends.
That said, the frustration lingers, especially when recalling the Martin Zubimendi saga. The midfield still needs reinforcement, and the idea of Ricci donning Liverpool red felt like the perfect fit. Fans will now look to the summer window with hope and expectation, trusting that the club will identify another option to bolster the squad’s midfield creativity and depth.
As the January window progresses, the sentiment among Liverpool supporters remains clear: if the club can capitalise on a “too good to miss” opportunity, they should seize it. But if not, the expectation is a significant summer investment to address any lingering gaps.
