FC Bayern Women got their 2024 off to a winning start with a commanding 4-0 friendly victory over Spanish top-flight side Granada. Captain Glódis Viggósdóttir opened the scoring inside six minutes before a quickfire double from Lea Schüller and Jill Baijings ensured a three-goal half-time lead. Pernille Harder rounded things off on the hour.

Prior to kick-off, there was a minute’s silence to remember Franz Beckenbauer. Bayern’s players also wore black armbands.

Three first-half goals

Bayern got off to a quick start and had their first good chance with only five minutes gone, but Schüller’s effort was repelled by Granada goalkeeper Andrea Romero for a corner. The Bundesliga champions took advantage of the set piece as Viggosdottir headed in Kathi Naschenweng’s delivery to get the show on the road. It was the Munich club – without Tuva Hansen and Jovana Damnjanovic due to workload management – who continued to dominate after that and pushed the Spanish side back inside their own half. Schüller thought she’d made it 2-0 after a lovely ball from Harder, but it was ruled out for offside against the Dane. There were no issues in the 35th minute, however, as Schüller put away a corner from Giulia Gwinn. The third goal followed only two minutes later as Baijings exchanged a one-two with Schüller before placing the ball into the bottom left corner.

Commanding second half

Alexander Straus’s side resumed on the front foot and continued to dominate proceedings. The fourth goal came on the hour mark as Bayern pounced on a Granada defensive mistake for Harder to put away for 4-0. The tempo dropped after that, but the touring Germans remained in control. Another good chance came on 77 minutes when Schüller got away down the left and put the ball into the centre to Sydney Lohmann, who put her shot narrowly wide. A commanding display over 90 minutes meant a 4-0 win for Bayern over the Liga F team.
