FC Bayern Women return from the international break with a huge game as they host Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 8 in the Google Pixel Bundesliga. The visitors to the FC Bayern Campus on Monday are only two points behind the league leaders in second, so the Munich Frauen can put some distance between themselves and a rival with victory. Kick-off is at 6pm CET. Here’s all you need to know ahead of the game.
A maiden Bundesliga goal from Alara Şehitler ensured Bayern went into the break with a last-minute win at Bayer Leverkusen and back on top of the table despite twice going behind in the 3-2 victory. It put Alexander Straus’s team in first place with 18 points after seven games, followed closely by Frankfurt and Wolfsburg on 16 each.
The prospects of an exciting encounter are very good for this game, given that the defending champions and last season’s third-placed team are both the top two for best attacks and defences this term. Although Frankfurt have started the season well, Bayern can go into the game with a healthy dose of confidence, given they have beaten Eintracht five times in the last seven competitive meetings, plus two draws.
Bayern won on penalties the last time they faced Frankfurt in the semi-final of the DFB Cup.
Eintracht have started the season well, earning 16 points so far to underline their early title ambitions. However, Niko Arnautis’s side suffered a surprise loss at home to Werder Bremen last time out, having previously beaten the likes of Freiburg (6-0), Essen (3-1) and cup holders Wolfsburg (3-0).
Bayern are still without Lena Oberdorf (cruciate ligament), Katharina Naschenweng (knee) and Franziska Kett (ankle) for this game.
Head coach Alexander Straus has been getting his side ready to secure a seventh win of the season at home to Frankfurt.
Sarah Zadrazil: “It’s important for us to approach every game the same way. We’ll be facing a very good team in Eintracht Frankfurt, so it’ll be a hotly contested, even game. I obviously hope we can keep the three points in Munich.”
Alexander Straus: “Games against Frankfurt are always very tight and hard-fought. They’re a team who’ve been together a long time, so have a lot of continuity and stability. Frankfurt aren’t playing in the Champions League so have a different level of workload than us. We were able to win meetings in the past, and we want to do the same again on Monday. We need to bring control and play out game.”
