Breaking news this weekend is that the 38-year-old is ready to return to his boyhood club, Boca Juniors. As told by César Luis Merlo, the former Real Madrid, Valencia and Roma midfielder is ready to leave Guadalajara after 10 months.
The Argentine signed as a Chivas head coach in January 2024 and has led his team out 38 times. In those games, Gago saw his team win 17 times, draw nine, and lose 12. Whilst he guided the club to the semi finals of the Clausura before suffering defeat to eventual winners Club América, Los Rojiblancos find themselves in 9th place after 11 games played.
This weekend, Gago's Chivas faced defeat to city-rivals Atlas at the Estadio Akron. Climbing above Los Rojiblancos, Atlas not only took the bragging rights but positional advantage in the league table.
Gago will be joining a Boca side that is sat in 15th in the Argentina Primera Division, collecting just five wins from the opening 16 games of the season. Currently managed by Diego Martínez who also arrived in January of this year, it seems that the higher-ups are ready for a quick change in order to change their fortunes.
Also, the club waved goodbye to continental chances after losing to Brazilian side Cruzeiro in the Copa Sudamericana and rest its chances for silverware this season on the Copa Argentina where they face Gimnasia LP in the quarter finals later this month.
César Luis Merlo suggests that Gerardo Espinoza is in advanced talks to replace Gago as the new manager of Chivas Guadalajara.
Told by RÉCORD Gerardo Espinoza took charge of Tapatío during the Apertura 2022. He departed after the Clausura 2023, during which he led the team to win the Liga de Expansión MX title and the Champion of Champions trophy. He has worked closely with players like Mateo Chávez, Raúl Martínez, and Raúl Rangel, all of whom he coached during his time in the second division with the Rojiblancos.
It has not been confirmed if Espinoza would be a permanent solution or just one to complete the remainder of the season, but the club has found Gago's successor quickly.
