The free agency list is always intriguing to look at and with the transfer window in full swing, here are five players who played in the Bundesliga last season, but are now available as free agents after their contracts expired.
Defensively one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga over the years, Ellyes Skhiri’s four-year spell at FC Köln has come to an end. With a market value of €13m, the Tunisian played 133 games across all competitions for the Billy Goats, scoring 20 and creating eight. But it was the player’s energetic performances that put Skhiri into the limelight. At 28, Skhiri is in his prime and it’s clear to see why clubs such as Borussia Dortmund and Lyon showed an interest last summer, but it appears to be Eintracht Frankfurt that are leading the way.
With 23 goal contributions (16 goals, 7 assists) in 47 games for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, Daichi Kamada enjoyed his best spell at the club. The Japanese playmaker has shone on the European stage and appears to be nearing a move to Milan, but it’s one that’s stalled given Italy’s non-EU players rule. Will Milan persist with the transfer, or could Barcelona or Atlético Madrid reignite their interest?
A mainstay in the Köln goal for so long, Timo Horn was displaced by Marvin Schwäbe but with 329 games across all competitions, he will go down as a club legend. At 30, he’s an excellent acquisition for someone on the market.
Arriving at Bayern Munich in January on a six-month deal, Daley Blind is back on the market. The Dutchman played just five games across all competitions, and didn’t feature under Thomas Tuchel.
Signed as a replacement after learning of Sébastien Haller’s cancer diagnosis back in July, Frenchman Anthony Modeste did an adequate job but was never going to be able to replicate his 20 Bundesliga goals he scored for Köln the prior season. Köln and Dortmund play completely different football and after a year in Dortmund, Modeste’s time at the club is over. At 35, what’s next for the Frenchman?
