Evan Ferguson (Brighton)

Evan Ferguson is one to watch in the January window. The 20-year-old has failed to reclaim his place in the Brighton side since returning from a lengthy layoff. With Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter and an evergreen Danny Welbeck ahead of him, he’s struggled for status in Fabian Hurzeler’s squad.

Just 18 months ago, Ferguson was being touted as a £100m player amid interest from the Premier League’s elite. His development has since stalled and a loan move could bring the best from the Irishman once again. Only last season, Ferguson became just the fourth Premier League player to score a hat-trick aged 18 or under. There is a queue of top-flight clubs monitoring his situation.

Marc Guiu (Chelsea)

Marc Guiu signed for Chelsea in the summer as the Spaniard sought a clearer route to first-team football. Chelsea’s place in the Europa Conference League has handed the 19-year-old minutes, where he has impressed during the Blues’ comfortable passage to the knockout rounds.

Guiu has scored six times in six games in Europe but has struggled for game time in other competitions. The teenager has totalled just 47 minutes outside of the Conference League and a loan move could fast-track his development in senior football.

The Spanish striker has averaged a goal every 71 minutes in his senior career to date, during spells at Barcelona and Chelsea.

Jake O’Brien (Everton)

Jake O’Brien has cut a frustrated figure across the first half of the season. The 23-year-old signed for Everton in a £16.4m deal from Lyon but has yet to start a league game for the Toffees. He’s featured just twice in the Premier League, a backward step following a breakthrough that saw O’Brien score five times in 27 appearances – including a goal in the Coupe de France final – for Lyon last season.

Effectively fourth-choice centre-back under Sean Dyche, clubs in the Championship and Europe are monitoring the defender.

James McAtee (Manchester City)

Premier League clubs are circling for James McAtee, the latest from the Manchester City conveyor belt of academy talent frustrated by a failure to break in at the Etihad.

The 22-year-old formed part of City’s FA Youth Cup-winning side in 2019/20, featuring alongside the likes of Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Taylor Harwood-Bellis. That trio have all become senior England internationals since leaving the Etihad, while another of that team, Liam Delap, has been tipped for a call-up in March after impressing at Ipswich Town.

McAtee might feel an exit is required to fulfil the potential that has long been discussed in Etihad circles.

Will Lankshear (Tottenham)

Will Lankshear made history last season as the first Tottenham player to be named the Premier League 2 Player of the Season. The 19-year-old’s prolific campaign saw him finish as the competition’s top scorer with 23 goals in a title-winning season.

He netted twice in the final win over Sunderland to conclude a brilliant individual campaign. Lankshear made his Spurs debut in October and has since made four senior appearances. He netted his first goal – and was later sent off – in the Europa League defeat at Galatasaray.

Despite an over-reliance on Dominic Solanke, he has been unable to secure more minutes and a loan move could benefit his development. Having proven to be a class above Premier League 2 level last season, it’s time for senior football.
