Flamengo have announced that defender Rodrigo Caio has been discharged from hospital after almost two weeks of treatment for a skin infection.
“Rodrigo Caio was discharged this Saturday morning. The club’s medical department will monitor the athlete’s evolution in the coming days,” a post on the club’s official Twitter account read.
The central defender reported that the stitches he had from a knee treatment undergone in December had become infected, and the Rubro-Negro took no risks with the 28-year-old.
“It was decided to hospitalise the player so that he could receive the antibiotic treatment intravenously to have the best result,” explained club doctor Márcio Tannure earlier this month.
Caio’s return will come as a boost for new manager Paulo Sousa, who has just finished his first week in charge of the Mengão’s pre-season training.
Flamengo start their Campeonato Carioca campaign on 26 January when they host Portuguesa-RJ.
