Flamengo manager Paulo Sousa believes his side were the better team despite their loss to Atlético Mineiro in the Supercopa do Brasil on Sunday.
Having come from behind to lead the Rubo-Negro were pinned back by Atlético Mineiro when Hulk scored with 15-minutes remaining before losing 8-7 on penalties.
“We were much superior and created more clear chances in the first half,” said the 51-year-old.
“Even after equalising, we had two good opportunities to take the lead. One with Vitinho and another with Lázaro.
“Above all it would seem that it’s down to the individual level where we need to make the step up.”
The Portuguese manager was quick to praise the level of support his team received and has challenged his players to raise their level.
“In order to get better, we must improve that hunger and determination to want to win,” he explained.
“We have to have the humility to realize that we didn’t win anything, or everything we won was left behind, the present is important and that is the challenge.”
Flamengo will have an opportunity to get back to winning ways on Wednesday when they travel to Botafogo.
