Diego Alves and David Luiz are notable absentees from Flamengo’s squad to face Chapecoense on Monday.
The club explained the duo’s omission with the following statement on social media: “The athlete Diego Alves showed marked physical wear. Will perform specific exercises in CT.
“David Luiz follows the gradual return schedule established by the medical department.”
Both players lasted the full 90 minutes in Friday’s 2-0 victory over Atlético Goianiense.
Goalkeeper Alves has made some crucial errors of late, however, while former Arsenal and Chelsea defender Luiz has been dogged by injuries since joining as a free agent in September.
In all, the Rubro-Negro are without 10 first-team members for the trip to face the basement side.
Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Kenedy, Filipe Luís, Diego Ribas, Pedro, and Thiago Maia are also sidelined through injury, while Andreas Pereira is suspended, and Mauricio Isla will be away on international duty with Chile.
Victory at the Arena Condá would move the Mengão to within nine points of Brasileirão leaders Atlético Mineiro, while leaving them with a single game in hand.
