Barcelona’s recent affair with Atletico Madrid was yet another example of how the Catalans have heavily focused on their attacking prowess, even if it comes at the expense of defensive vulnerabilities.

The club’s high line of defence means they can quickly instigate counterattacks and have the edge over the opponent in the second line of press. But it also makes them very susceptible to opposition attacks, as they often leave space in behind.

Barcelona have embraced this new method under Flick, but over time, there has been growing criticism regarding the club’s lack of defensive solidity.

Flick ready to ignore critics

Despite the growing pressure over Barcelona’s defensive frailties, coach Flick has no desire to change his team’s style, reports SPORT.

Although the German tactician has acknowledged the team’s defensive frailties, he believes changing the gameplan in the middle of the season is futile and counterproductive.

Flick also realises that Barcelona are particularly weak when it comes to wider areas of defence – something his opposition has also realised lately.

That said, Flick is clear about his game plan and will continue to prioritise attack over defence until the end of the season, regardless if his team wins or loses.

The report adds that the Barcelona coach is sure about his preferred starting lineup now more than ever and there will be fewer rotations now that we are on the brink of the final phase of the campaign.

Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi are also set to continue at the heart of the Barça defence until the end of the season, with minimal chances for other defenders.

Flick’s philosophy is clear – improving the attack will yield better defensive output or at least negate the team’s defensive lapses.

But whether or not this radical thinking can help Barcelona yield results come the end of the season remains to be seen.
