Zlatan Ibrahimovic has the casting vote on whether to stick with or part ways with Milan coach Paulo Fonseca, whose position is currently being assessed ahead of the Derby della Madonnina ‘away’ against Inter on Sunday.

Fonseca’s position with the Rossoneri is under threat after a poor start to the season, which has seen them win just once from five competitive matches. The calls for the coach’s head intensified after a particularly poor performance against Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ibrahimovic is currently an advisor to Milan’s owners RedBird Capital and Gerry Cardinale’s man on the ground. He was at Milanello on Thursday to address the players before training, which caused a slight delay to the start of Fonseca’s session.

According to recent updates from Calciomercato.com, the decision on whether to fire Fonseca lies with Ibrahimovic.

Earlier reports suggest that only a convincing win over Inter in the derby on Sunday will be enough for Fonseca to keep his job. Thursday afternoon’s update, however, suggests that he could even be dismissed before then.

The fact that Milan do not have a favoured successor lined up just yet favours Fonseca and the likelihood of him staying on for the Inter game on Sunday, though.

The Rossoneri have been linked with the likes of Maurizio Sarri and former Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, but there is no formal agreement in place with either of them as things stand.
