Milan star Rafael Leao revealed that Rossoneri coach Paulo Fonseca was still giving him tactical instructions while the pair made their way over to their Champions League press conference on Monday evening.

Milan are due to face Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena on Tuesday night in the second round of league phase fixtures in the 2024-25 edition of the Champions League.

Leao, who wore the captain’s armband during Friday evening’s 3-0 demolition of Lecce in San Siro, has spoken a lot recently of Fonseca’s desire for him to improve on the defensive aspects of his game.

During his pre-match press conference on Monday, Leao explained that Fonseca was talking him through video analysis relating to his game out of possession during the car journey on the way over to the venue.

“From day one, the coach didn’t talk to me about goals or assists, rather that he wanted a changed player in terms of defence, to be more focused on the defensive work,” Leao said when asked what areas Fonseca wants to improve.

“He is helping me to become better. Even when we were on our way here, he was showing me a couple of videos in the car. He’s someone who is helping me a lot.

Leao later added: “He showed me moments without the ball, the positioning to jump on second balls. More defensive things.”

According to recent reports, Leao has even been undertaking extra training sessions to work on the defensive elements of his game.

Pleasingly for Fonseca, Milan have conceded just once in their last three Serie A matches, which came in the 2-1 victory away against reigning champions Inter.
