Vinicius Junior missed out on the 2024 men’s Ballon d’Or due to “football politics”, according to Real Madrid teammate Eduardo Camavinga.
The Brazilian attacker was widely tipped to take home the prestigious honour at Monday night’s awards ceremony after playing a key role in Los Blancos’ Uefa Champions League and La Liga triumphs last season.
But the Spanish club boycotted the event after learning that Manchester City midfielder Rodri was going to be presented with the Ballon d’Or after being voted the best male player by 100 journalists.
In a statement released to AFP and Spanish media, Real Madrid said they had been disrespected and would “not go where it is not respected”.
The club’s players have been reacting to Vinicius Junior not winning the award on social, with France international Camavinga posting: “FOOTBALL POLITICS. My brother you are the best player in the world and no award can say otherwise. Love you my bro.”
Federico posted a tribute to the 24-year-old, writing: “There’s no award that acknowledges how good you are and I’m not just talking about your player quality but off the court as well. I love you brother.”
Rodrygo posted: “And so our world goes… We keep going, Vinicius Jr I love you.”
Former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos posted a picture of himself and Vinicius Junior, captioned: “The best”.
Brazil legend Rivaldo, won the Ballon d’Or in 1999, said he was surprised that his compatriot didn’t win the award.
“It has never crossed my mind that Vini Jr won the award because in my opinion he is the best and should have won and I don’t understand the criteria used by the people who voted. I hope you win FIFA THE BEST Awards. But I congratulate Rodri for winning the award. I admire his football and I think he’s a great player.”
