West Ham United could be handed a massive transfer boost in their search for a new striker as the winter transfer window closes.

The Hammers have prioritised the addition of a centre-forward to sort out their injury crisis in attacking areas this month.

Michail Antonio and Niclas Fullkrug are set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, while Jarrod Bowen has also been out injured since he fractured his foot in December.

The England international could return against Chelsea on February 3, but West Ham still need to bolster their ranks with the addition of a striker before the transfer window closes.

Several players have been linked with a move to the London Stadium this month, including Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.

The Hammers submitted a club-record £57 million bid for the Colombian striker, but Villa made it clear he wasn’t for sale.

Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi has also been linked with the club, and a recent development suggests they may be able to lure him away from City Ground this month.

Forest’s interest in Wissa could facilitate Awoniyi’s exit

West Ham have already made enquiries about Awoniyi’s availability.

While Forest didn’t exactly shut the door on the Hammers, they won’t sell the Nigerian striker until a replacement is secured.

However, West Ham have been handed a glimmer of hope as Forest ramp up efforts to sign Brentford striker Yoane Wissa.

Their £22m bid falls short of Brentford’s asking price, but Forest will be more open to negotiating an exit for Awoniyi if they reach an agreement.

The Nigerian has played second fiddle to Chris Wood since returning from a lengthy lay-off, and West Ham could offer him an escape route away from City Ground this month.

Given his concerning injury record, West Ham would be wise to push for an initial loan deal before revisiting their plans in the summer.
