Former Argentina star Fernando Gago considering retirement | OneFootball

After his most recent injury, Boca Juniors midfielder Fernando Gago is thinking about hanging up his boots at age 32.

In the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final against rivals River Plate, Gago tore his Achilles tendon for the third time since September 2015. All three of his ruptures have come in the Superclásico.

While Gago’s first two Achilles tears were sustained on his left leg within eight months of one another, his latest injury was sustained on his right side – which immediately led to rumours that he could retire.

These rumours have now been backed by reports in the Argentine media.

The former Real Madrid midfielder underwent successful surgery on his ruptured Achilles last week.

In addition to tearing his Achilles three times since returning to Boca Juniors, Gago tore his anterior cruciate ligament last October, which kept him off the pitch until May.

Gago earned 61 caps for Argentina and came on as an 86th-minute substitute in the 2014 World Cup final.

After starting his footballing life at Boca at age five, he began his professional career with the Argentine superpower in December 2004 and was signed by Real Madrid in January 2007.

Gago played at the Bernabéu until 2012, going on loan to Roma in his final year before heading off to Valencia.

After 13 La Liga appearances for Los Murciélagos, he went on loan to Vélez Sarsfield for the second half of the season before returning to Boca Juniors in the summer of 2013.
