Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila has been confirmed as the new Head Coach of MLS side Atlanta United. The 49-year-old has decided to leave his role with UAE outfit Al Wahda.
Deila was confirmed by Atlanta United as the new gaffer of the East Coast outfit on Friday.
“Atlanta United announced Ronny Deila as the head coach of Atlanta United on December 20, 2024.
Deila brings more than 17 years of head coaching experience across multiple countries and has won a total of six trophies, including four league titles and two domestic cup competitions. The Norwegian manager returns to MLS where he won the MLS Cup with New York City FC in 2021. Welcome to the city of Atlanta, Coach!”
Deila joined Celtic in 2014 as a surprise appointment from Stromsgodset. Ronny won 2 titles and 1 league cup in his time in Glasgow and played a role in the side’s push towards 9IAR. It is right that the role that he played in developing the club is widely recognised. He was put in an impossible position whereby he was only given some tools to do the job with decisions being taken from above with regards to transfers etc.
Deila lifted the MLS Cup with New York City and was praised for his success in ‘The Big Apple’ for the City Football Group outfit. A return to Europe with Standard Liege lasted a year before jumping ship to their Belgian rivals, Club Brugge.
There is no update regarding Kenny Miller, who joined Deila in UAE as his Assistant Manager. Deila will be hoping to have a successful return to The States.
