It is fair to say that Johnson is one of the most well-respected players at Barclays Women’s Championship level. In addition to her long stay at Crystal Palace, Johnson has also turned out for Durham and London Bees in the second tier. The player has been a popular member of every dressing room in her time as a professional footballer and her presence will no doubt be missed by all.

Announcing her retirement, Johnson said “Fourteen incredible seasons, a few trophies and a few awards and now feels the right time to hang up my boots. It’s been an amazing journey filled with highs, lows and unforgettable memories. As I step away from the pitch, I want to share all the love to those who made my career possible.

“To my family, especially mum, dad, Alice and Nic; your support has been my rock. From the early days when I first kicked a ball to the final whistle of my last game, your advice and encouragement was a constant. While I can’t promise that my next step will be any easier for you, I can assure you that we’re all in for another wild ride.

“To my friends, thank you for understanding and supporting my football despite missing countless events and milestones. Your patience and friendship means the world to me.

“To my former teammates, what an honour it’s been to play alongside so many powerful, influential and impressive women. We’ve shared laughter, tears and incredible moments on the pitch. You’ve shaped my career and I’m forever grateful.

“Now, I’m excited to learn a different side of the game as I step into coaching and put my experience to good use.”

Johnson is set to begin work to obtain her UEFA B Licence qualification this summer.
