Xabi Alonso has undisputedly become the favourite to replace Carlo Ancelotti in the Real Madrid bench next season.

However, not too long ago, Real Madrid were actually interested in the services of Jurgen Klopp. The club had even contacted the former Liverpool coach, trying to lure him out of the Red Bull franchise.

But Klopp wasn’t too interested in the job, as he informed Real Madrid that he was having doubts about becoming a coach again.

Real Madrid duly moved on and stepped up their efforts to secure the services of Xabi Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen.

The German feels he should have said yes to the Real Madrid opportunity.

Klopp’s stance on coaching appeared uncertain following his emotional exit from Liverpool, with the 56-year-old suggesting he needed a break from football.

But as weeks have passed, it seems the allure of managing the world’s most prestigious club has started to weigh on his mind.

Unfortunately for him, Real Madrid have already made their move. The club have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Xabi Alonso, who is set to replace Ancelotti in the coming summer.

While Klopp’s regret comes a little too late, Real Madrid fans will be excited to welcome back a familiar face — and one of Europe’s brightest young coaches — to lead the team into a new era.
